The Newburg Home Guard
II

Between May and September 1861, the enthusiasm and support for the war effort swelled. Whereas only 51 volunteers signed onto the Newburg company in April, twice as many volunteers had signed up by September 1861. Add the fact that new volunteer Home Guard companies were being formed throughout Warrick County, and new regular army regiments from the region were also being created in this timeframe, and one can conclude that the war effort was very well supported in southern Indiana in the opening months of the war.

The information below is presented just as it is on the original documentation.

This is to certift that the above is a true copy of the Muster Roll of Captain Bethell's Company of Home Guards of In. Legion Newburgh Sept 27, 1861.

Union Bethell, Capton

James G. Root, Company Chrls (?)

This list is interesting in that many of the Newburgh raid players were members of this incarnation of the Home Guard; J. R. Tilman, Soloman Coker, William Slaughter (who probably treated Elliot Mefford on the night of the raid), J. N. McGill (the likely triggerman for the shooting of John Patterson), J. M. Carney (one of Hamp Carney's brothers), Union Bethell, Eli Lewis, etc. They are all here working toward one purpose. From the way the list is put together (alphabetically) we can guess that a previous list was generated beforehand and transcribed later for this submission to state authorities. A notation on the outside of the document states that there were 88 members listed herein. At entry 97 the strict alphabetical order breaks down. These two pieces of information indicate that, even as the September list was being accumulated, more and more Guard volunteers were coming forth.

The list is also noteworthy in that only two official positions are listed: Company Captain, and James Root's position which can not be deciphered. No other ranks are listed next to the enlistees.
