Kentuckians in Gray is a one-of-a-kind resource book for all those interested in Confederate generals born in the the Bluegrass state. Profiled are thirty-nine generals from the not-so-famous to those among the most important Confederate generals in the Civil War. Each of the generals listed below is the subject of a medium-length (2,500 word) essay covering their family background, education, pre-war activities, Civil War service, and post-war lives. There is focused emphasis on their war service.
After the large section on Kentucky generals, forty more pages are devoted to biographical blurbs of field officers of Kentucky CSA units. Highlights are provided for one hundred twenty-six Confederate field commanders from Colonel Robert Maxwell Martin and Colonel Leroy Stuart Cluke to Colonel Robert P. Trabue and Colonel William Preston Johnston. Many names that resonate through the annals of Civil War history are discussed in this work.
As you can see below, the authors participating in this project are among the most respected Civil War researchers writing today. The contributors have authored many Civil War books preceding this effort. Below I have listed each Confederate general (in blue) and the responsible author in Kentuckians in Gray. I have also provided a link to additional reading from the contributing author.
